3/1/2010:
Second week in the books and there were several great
performances to report on in this week’s edition of “9-INNINGS”…
·
1st:
Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz was
named SEC Pitcher of the Week after his gem against Oakland;
“Pomz” faced 25 batters, striking out 15 (1 shy of his personal
record of 16 set in last year’s Regionals) en-route to his first
win of the season; his line for the game was 7IP, 4H, 1ER, 15K,
0BB; his 15 K’s ties a Mississippi school record (post-season
stats don’t count in the record books)…
·
2nd:
Oregon State junior Greg Peavey received
PAC-10 Pitcher of the Week award for his dominant
performance against Tennessee this past weekend; Peavey notched
his first win of the year with a complete game shut-out of the
Vols going 9IP, 1H, 0R/ER, 9K, 1BB, 1HBP; the award was actually
Peavey’s second of the day, coming soon after he was announced
as the Golden Spikes Spotlight Player of the Week…
·
3rd:
LSU junior Micah Gibbs did his part this past weekend in
keeping LSU ranked #1;
Gibbs’ solo shot in the 8th inning against
McNeese State powered the Tigers win 2-1; up to that point it
was a pitcher’s duel; while that game was the most dramatic
example of Gibbs’ contributions, the junior catcher was
spectacular most every game, batting 9-for-19, 2 2B, 2 HR, 6
RBI, 1 SB…
·
4th:
Clemson sophomore Brad Miller made his own
significant contributions this past week in keeping the
“other” Tigers undefeated; Miller’s weekly batting line:
5-for-11, 4 2B, 4 RBI; one of those 4 doubles scored a go-ahead
game-winning run, while two others set up an eventual 3 runs…
·
5th:
Arizona state sophomore Riccio Torrez logged his first HR
of the season during a well-rounded showing; Torrez went .438 on
7-for-16 hitting with 2 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 2 HBP and 2 SB…
·
6th:
Arkansas junior Andy Wilkins made a lot out of little
this weekend; logging only 10 at-bats in the weekend series,
Wilkins (aka “Diesel”) managed to score 6 runs and notch 7
RBI’s, going 4-for-10 with 1 2B, 2 HR’s, 1 BB, 1 HBP and 1 SB…
·
7th:
Not only does Arizona State sophomore Jordan Swagerty
pitch AND catch, but he did BOTH in Sunday’s game against
Towson; after catching 8 innings and driving in what would prove
to be the 1 run needed for the win on an RBI double, Swagerty
was called from behind the plate to pitch the 9th
inning! Of course he earned the save, his first of the year…
·
8th:
UNC junior Matt Harvey bounced back from a very mediocre
opening weekend start (5.2IP, 5H, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) to earn his
first win of season; Harvey ended up going 6.1 IP, fanning 9,
while giving up 1 run on 3 hits and a walk; UNC coach Matt
Clements
noticed the difference as well…
·
9th:
At first glance, you may get worried when you see Bryce
Harper’s weekly numbers (all 0’s); fear not, the College of
Southern Nevada had two weeks off before they open conference
play on March 5th…
·
That’s it
for this week! There’s so much more that we just can’t get to,
but you should be able to get a good idea of who was hot and who
was not with the weekly stats below (cumulative
season stats are located on a different page);
thanks for tuning in and check back often as we have a ton of
new content being created for the site for the new season…
